After 18 years of development, Pattern Energy’s SunZia project is fully operational. It is the largest renewable energy and transmission scheme in US history, comprising a 3.65 GW wind farm and a 550-mile high-voltage direct current transmission line across New Mexico and Arizona.

Together, the wind farm and transmission line are designed to deliver more power than the Hoover Dam, supplying enough electricity to power around one million American homes annually.

The project’s completion is a massive milestone for the US grid, proving that while interstate transmission lines are notoriously difficult to permit and build, they are not impossible. "Now, New Mexico is home to one of the largest energy infrastructure projects in the Western Hemisphere," said US Senator Martin Heinrich.
